For decades we have walked our dogs, even experienced judgment if we don’t make sure they get enough exercise. Well, what about our cats? I would argue that they are just as much our faithful companions, but for some reason, walking them is WEIRD.

“Today’s indoor cat is a tiger robbed of his dominion...”

— New York Times, "Yes, You Should Walk Your Cat" by David Grimm

It can be just as mentally stimulating for your cat to go on walks. Walks are much needed adventures for animals that are inside for the majority of the day. All our pets enjoy the sights and sounds of some time in the fresh air. We should start giving our cats that experience as well.

“A lot of cats love to go outside and smell things, see things and roll around in sand and grass and dirt. They love to scratch real trees.”

— HuffPost, "How To Walk Your Cat On A Leash, And Why You Should" - Kate Bratskeir

Just as when you walk your dog, there are a number of dangers possible while walking your cat, from animal attacks to pesticide exposure. In particular, cats are also at risk for Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV), Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) and fleas, with outdoor exposure. Just as dogs are at risk for fleas, ringworm , kennel cough, and Canine Influenza. The risks for dogs haven’t stopped us, so why should it for cats. If you are a responsible pet owner, take your cat to the vet regularly to stay up to date on their vaccines, maintain their hygiene, and ensure a safe environment as best you can, most likely they will be just fine on a walk.

“Not all cats will want to be walked on a leash, but every cat should be given the opportunity. ”

— HuffPost, "How To Walk Your Cat On A Leash, And Why You Should" - Kate Bratskeir

It’s true, cats are not inclined to walk on a leash, but being a dog walker, I have also walked several dogs that are not fans of being on a leash. I think it just has to do with personality and what your individual pet needs. It is important to protect your animal’s personal space and to avoid high stress encounters with other people or animals. Just as you teach a dog to walk, treat training and positive reinforcement can help with the process.

Some dogs and cats will like open patches of grass to wander and explore and some will like a brisk walk, following a path. If your cat isn’t a walker, even just putting them on a leash, in a secure outdoor area, where they can sunbathe or roam can be extremely enjoyable for them. The experience will strengthen your relationship with your cat as you explore new things with them. Even if it is WEIRD.
